上田純子：薩摩琵琶語り・声明
The Japanese epic story telling tradition of Heike Monogatari, as I believe, perfectly reflects our modern world with its dramatic episodes of universal human emotion and its Buddhistic idea of cause and effect and human life's impermanence. It is my sincere passion to perform this traditional music for a contemporary audience, sharing a space and time to discover an essence of humanity.
A musical performance of Junko Ueda extends Japanese ancient sound into modern times. Both the biwa epic story telling tradition as well as shomyo Buddhist chant are unique musical treasures which have been passed on from generation to generation.
語り物の伝統音楽である薩摩琵琶、そして仏教の声の音楽である声明ともに、その昔より世代から世代へと途絶えることなく受け継がれてきたユニークで貴重な音楽です。上田純子は現代における音楽の現場で、これらの古代の音を鮮明かつ活力的に生かすことを追求しています。
東京生まれ。薩摩琵琶を故鶴田錦史（薩摩琵琶鶴田流）に師事。天台声明を海老原広伸に師事。1981年から1988年の間、劇団ブレヒトの会（故千田是也代表）にて編曲、ピアノ演奏を担当する（ロシア未来派オペラ「太陽の征服」ー西武美術館／一柳慧とのピアノ連弾、他）。東京音楽大学作曲科卒（有馬礼子、湯浅譲二、池野成に師事）。インドネシアのジャワのガムランを５年間、バリのガムランを２年間演奏する。1986年から88年の間、東京国立劇場の伶楽、声明、現代音楽の定期公演に参加。正倉院の復元楽器、箜篌、七絃琴、そして薩摩琵琶の演奏を担当する。また、正倉院の復元楽器「伶楽」のCD録音に箜篌の演奏にて参加する。
1988年よりオランダ（アムステルダム）とスペイン（グラナダ）拠点として、薩摩琵琶古典、声明、自作自演のソロ・コンサート、そして声明ワークショップを世界中の様々な場所で繰り広げている。また数々の音楽祭にも参加している。比叡山にてライヴ録音されたソロCD「平家物語」（AIMP／スイス）はパリのアカデミ・シャルル・クロ・ディスク・グランプリを、そして、琵琶古典と武満徹の作品を収録したCD「薩摩琵琶」(Arion/パリ、シリーズ Ethnomad ／ジュネーブ）は「Le Monde de la Musique, Paris」の Choc 賞を受賞する。また、天台声明の作品を収録したCD「瞑想する花たち」と「九條錫杖」を発売する (E-records、グラナダ、スペイン)。
1995年より声明ワークショップを世界各国で行っている。このワークショップでは、声明のメロディーを歌うこと楽しみながら、1200年の歴史を持つ伝統との出会いを通して、「息」の持つ知恵とパワー、そしてヒューマニティーのエッセンスを探ることを目指す。2024年に「聲明、日本の仏教聖歌の知恵を探る」を出版する。この本では、聲明の歴史や楽典の他に、上田自身が海老原廣伸氏の指導のもとで聲明を練習し続け、また、聲明ワークショップを行いながらの体験を通して気づいた聲明の持つ知恵、そしてそれらの知恵を、個人の実生活や持続可能な社会形成に役立たせるためのアイデアについて話している（A５版、204ページ、日本語）。
薩摩琵琶と声明のための新しい作品の誕生にも積極的に貢献し、即興演奏の場にも参加している。作曲家ジャン・クロード・エロア、原田敬子、内藤明美、等が彼女のために曲を書いている。そして、チェロのヨーヨー・マ、ビオラ・ダ・ガンバのジョルディ・サバイ、オランダの現代音楽グループ・ニュー・アンサンブル、コントラバスのペーター・コーワルド、打楽器奏者イン・スエ・チェン、ル・クアン・ニン等と共演し、数々の現代音楽祭も参加している。武満徹の琵琶のための作品「ノベンバー・ステップス」「旅」などの演奏も行う。また、オランダのフルート奏者、ウィル・オッフェルマンズとのデュオの演奏活動では、アメリカ／カナダ（２回）、インドネシア（２回）、日本（毎年）、南米コロンビアにて長期に渡るコンサート・ツアーを行ない、現地の音楽家、作曲家との交流を深めた。様々な音楽祭にも参加する。デュオCD「How to Survive in Paradise」（VDE／スイス）を発表。さらに、上田は様々な国際文化交流事業のプロデューサーとしても活躍する（例：12xおらんだ；Body & Soul Xperience Caravan)。2021年より、フランスの前衛ロックバンド PoiL との共演を行なっている。このプロジェクト「ポアル・上田」では、ヨーロッパ広範囲に渡ってコンサート・ツアーを行ない、2023年にアルバム（CD／LP）「ポアル・上田」（Dur et Doux、フランス）を、2024年に「義経」（Dur et Doux、フランス）発表している。

Performing satsuma-biwa music: A challenge for sharing an emotion, which is evoked when you touch the significant dignity facing to the deepness which has been continuously developed through the tradition. My biwa teacher, Ms. Kinshi Tsuruta was convinced that everywhere in the world, the biwa story-telling music can be understood. One of the most important elements of the story-telling is the sound of the voice and the breath which contain human’s thoughts, feeling and deep sense. The most impressive element is not the meaning of the words, but the sound of the voice and the timing 'MA' of the breath.
Singing shomyo: The human being is a child created from the stars wandering in the universal space. Then, now, by the action of singing, the small energy of voice or a vibration wave of the sound goes to the air. The wave continues traveling in the universal space. A little energy of the voice goes back to the universe where once human was created. A little energies of the voice are piled up in the universe and again continue wandering in the space like stars. If the imagining the universe is the existence of the universe itself, I imagine that my voice continue to wander in the space as an evident energy of the existence of the universe.
Playing the Biwa: One of the most characteristic effects of the biwa sound is "sawari" effect. "Sawari" means "to touch". Through touching, it creates mixture, distortion, waves and finally a complex noise which may consider as a "beautiful noise”. The sawari sound seems to symbolize the aspects of the nature or the universe.
Playing Music: A voyage towards something universal. An admiration towards something meditative. And through the act of music, a challenge towards healthy and peaceful world and common feelings to share with the people. Music is an essential food for the heart of the people.
